Marcal turns to ConsumerPowerline for energy conservation

NEW YORK, Aug. 20, 2008 (PRNewswire) - ConsumerPowerline, Inc., a leading strategic energy asset management firm, today announced an energy conservation program for Marcal Manufacturing, LLC, a leader in recycling recovered paper for its popular tissue products. Marcal will use ConsumerPowerline's energy management "demand response" solution to reduce electric energy consumption at the facility, supporting the company's history of sustainable manufacturing.

Under the terms of the agreement, Marcal will work with ConsumerPowerline to reduce a total of 18 megawatts (MW) of electricity when requested by PJM Interconnection, the regional transmission organization responsible for calling demand response events when the grid is under stress. ConsumerPowerline has worked with Marcal to design a curtailment plan that will allow the company to decrease its electrical usage across 15 buildings located in its New Jersey campus for a limited number of hours per year.

Marcal will reduce its electricity consumption during critical times when blackouts and brownouts are imminent, reducing stress on the electrical grid and decreasing the need for electricity providers to generate additional power to meet demand. Additionally, ConsumerPowerline will work with Marcal to create new revenue streams, beyond the reductions in energy bills and rebates realized through upgrades to the plant's electrical infrastructure, including lighting, HVAC systems, motors and other systems.

"We evaluated several companies, and ultimately chose ConsumerPowerline because in addition to offering the most cost-effective and efficient solutions for our needs, the company is also aligned with our greater mission to tread more lightly on the world. We ultimately aim to raise awareness of what we are doing at Marcal to lessen our environmental impact, and partnering with ConsumerPowerline will help us achieve that goal," said Tim Spring, Marcal's CEO. "We have been using only recycled paper for more than 50 years. We are constantly looking for new ways to build on that eco-friendly heritage."

Marcal has been committed to environmentally friendly initiatives. Each year, the company collects more than 200,000 tons of paper and from that, produces recycled products for the home and office. In an effort to further advance its green efforts and become more energy efficient, Marcal has incorporated ConsumerPowerline's demand response solution, reducing both its energy consumption and associated costs.

"Marcal is already known for being a leader in environmentally friendly solutions for the disposable world, and we applaud their commitment to embrace energy efficiency," said Gary Fromer, CEO of ConsumerPowerline. "We are excited to work with Marcal and deliver on the value of demand response."
