SAO PAULO, Aug. 15, 2008 (RISI) - Argentina's Papel Misionero has formally agreed with Misiones' state, where its pulp and paper facility is located, to invest Peso 135 million ($44 million) in order to establish clean production parameters. The investment will take 36 months and aim to convert its paper and pulp production processes from oil fuel to biomass.
Eduardo Landin, Papel Misionero's CEO, and Maurice Closs, Misiones' governor, signed an agreement to approve the expenditure, which is part of an Industrial Recovery Plan in the country.
According to the agreement established, Papel Misioneros will have to reduce by 10% its total water consumption, minimize liquid and gas effluents discharges, cut down residues generation as well as assert a correct destination for its dangerous residues. The company also will have to make use of its energy rationally and improve its control and monitoring systems which will be supervised by the Argentina's Sustainable Development Chancery.
Regarding biomass recovery, the company will invest in a biomass boiler installation.
Papel Misionero's plant currently produces 95,000 tonnes/yr of containerboard and packaging papers and 97,000 tonnes/yr of unbleached kraft pulp.
